I live in Portland, Oregon, where I own real estate and run Beacon Rock Property Management. I’m most interested in the physical side of the work: visiting sites, watching buildings change, and figuring out how older ones work.
I studied economics and mathematics at Linfield College, then earned a J.D. and a Master of Environmental Law and Policy from Vermont Law School. I’m a licensed property manager in Oregon and an inactive member of the Oregon State Bar.
This site is where I write about buildings, property management, and things I’ve learned through the work. I also keep a list of resources I’ve found useful.

I’m paying close attention to the practical tradeoffs in keeping an older building’s character and feel while giving it new life through physical and mechanical improvements.
I’m reading and listening to material on markets, politics, business, and management. I’m also revisiting some classics by Charles Dickens and Michael Gerber.
